Dear Robert Beard,

We admire the work you have done and I personally would like to thank you for
placing/linking to http://dict.leo.org
on http://www.yourDictionary.com
Myself being the major contributor of language material to the LEO dictionary, I
am very proud of the progress we have been making, daily 600.000+ visitors,
monthly 11.000.000 in November. http://dict.leo.org/stat/html/

Retired from a 25-7year teaching job at Fachhochschule Nürnberg (University of
Applied Science) I concentrate on non-commecial publication of my work either
through LEO or on CD-ROM.

Mr Honey's Business and Finance Dictionary on CD-ROM
http://mrhoney.de/latest.htm
Ever since 1970 collecting dictionary material and publishing on diskettes and
CDs. And, of course, ONLINE LEO.

The vision I have is an Offline-Online Interface.
Some material on my CD runs under a WINDOW program, takes you to an MS-DOS Window
with the dictionary programs.
Some material is HTML OFFLINe with Links to the WWW. Such as
http://mrhoney.de/dos/1/HTML/1woe.htm
where I linked to the WEB of Online
Dictionaries.

is now

At present I am preparing a new edition for October 2001, and I would love to
replace my own very small dictionary portal 1woe.htm with an OFFLINE - ONLINE
interface that's really good. In other words I would like to take 12 Mbytes of my
own material off the CD-ROM and replace it by a partial mirror of your site.

Why all that ? Here in this country 6% of the people have Internet Access
compared with maybe 38% inthe US.
Whilest 80% in my country have access to a PC. Most PCs have a CD-ROM drive.
That's the people I am inteested in. If I want to reach them, I will achieve this
with a Hybrid, an OFFLINE-ONLINE version, my dictionaries given away below cost
and convincing material for them to carry on.

Why am I doing this below cost. (Euro 5.- = US$2 CD-ROM including handling and
postage) ?
It cost me DM 1,250.000+ = US$500.000+ - in exchange we have a new university
(Ansbach refounded 1992)
I got a sabbatical year from my superiors =US$50.000 and promised to give away the results.

Notes: (Dr. Beard is now the Chief Linguistics Officer and CTO of yourDictionary.com.) yourDictionary.com has been recognized as the web's pre-eminent language portal by dozens of organizations around the world. Most recently, yourDictionary.com was selected as the "Best of the Web for Reference" by Forbes magazine. Other recent accolades have come from The New Yorker, the BBC, the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Washington Post, USA Today, and Yahoo Internet Life, among many others. The Advisory Council of Experts The authority and academic rigor of the yourDictionary.com site is, perhaps, best exemplified by our Advisory Council of Experts (ACE), which comprises some two dozen of the world's most accomplished linguists. The distinguished members of the Council provide indispensable guidance in the development, acquisition, and maintenance of the dictionaries under their purview, and help ensure the integrity of their respective areas of linguistic specialization. Members of the Council also contribute original articles to the YDC Library. Preserving the World's Linguistic Heritage Of the seven thousand languages and dialects spoken on the planet, experts have concluded that more than half are endangered and actually headed toward extinction by the end of the century. To help preserve the languages and the distinct heritage each represents, yourDictionary.com has created the Endangered Language Repository (ELR). The purpose of the ELR is to provide a sanctuary for these languages on the worldwide web, to better enable access by both scholars and interested laypersons. What's Going On? The intention of yourDictionary.com is to become the most authoritative and comprehensive Web portal specializing in information about language - any language in the world. Come here to look up a general or specialized word in English or foreign-language dictionaries. We will do our best to provide a home, or link to all the creditable dictionaries, glossaries and wordlists available on the Web. But yourDictionary.com will do more than that: it will provide ways of building vocabularies, studying grammar, practicing spoken and written languages. It will provide scientific information about language as well as various forms of language play designed to build language skills. If you don't find the linguistic information you want here, let us know, for yourDictionary.com is also a language-interest community designed to find and share information about speaking, reading, writing and comprehending your own language and all the other languages in the world.
